What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy has been used for many years in various fields of medicine, and more recently in aesthetics and anti-aging medicine. In many places around the world, this therapy is being widely used as a natural therapy for skin rejuvenation and hair growth stimulation.

Aging of the skin means that the skin texture and appearance begins to decline, especially on the face, hands and décolleté as the skin on these areas is subject to more exposure to the sun and wind. This is where we notice more wrinkling, thinning skin, age spots or puffiness. Using Platelet Rich Plasma stimulates the healing and regeneration of the skin.

What does the treatment entail?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a substance that is extracted from the individual’s own blood, which makes it very safe and free from any allergenic potential. Blood must first be drawn from the arm of the individual receiving the treatment. It is then centrifuged twice at specific velocities in order to concentrate the healing and growth factors that are naturally present in the blood. The PRP is then injected into the area to be treated.

How does it work?

Our blood naturally contains specific cells that stimulated healing and collagen production. The PRP extraction process concentrated these cell which are then injected into the skin or scalp. When placed into the skin, the PRP stimulates healing of the skin which supports collagen production, skin elasticity. On the scalp, the PRP stimulates hair follicles to produce new hair, thus providing effective treatment for thinning hair.

Improvement in skin texture and tone and new hair growth are noticeable in as little as 3 weeks and full collagen regeneration requires up to 3 months. Redness and minor swelling and tender areas may be noticed for up to 24 hours after the treatment and minor bruising may occur for 2 to 3 days after the procedure. Results are noticeable for up to 18 months. The number of treatments required to achieve the desired results will vary depending on the individual.

How is it different from Botox and Fillers?

Botox and fillers are popular cosmetic procedures that give the skin a more youthful appearance by decreasing wrinkles or filling areas where collagen has decreased. These therapies work by injecting various substances into the skin to achieve the desired result.

PRP differs as it stimulates healing of the skin at a cellular level, acting on small wrinkles, scars, skin tone and texture and age spots, giving a natural more youthful appearance to the skin over time. It is a treatment that can be used to treat and prevent deterioration of the skin.
